Important information for travellers visiting Tanzania

1. The "Shilling Only" Law (New for 2026)

As of late 2025 and finalized in January 2026, the Tanzanian government has strictly enforced a ban on using foreign currency for domestic transactions.

  • The Rule: All goods and services—including restaurant meals, local souvenirs, and taxi rides—must be priced and paid for in Tanzanian Shillings (TZS).
  • Exceptions: You can still use USD for your Visa on Arrival, safari park fees (at the gate), and high-end hotel bookings.
  • Advice: Exchange or withdraw TZS immediately upon arrival at the airport or in Arusha/Dar es Salaam. Many local vendors are now facing heavy fines if they accept your USD, so they will strictly refuse it.

2. Entry & Visa (Kenyan/East African Travelers)

  • Visa-Free: If you have a Kenyan or East African passport, you are still visa-exempt for up to 90 days.

  • The "Yellow Card": Since you are coming from Kenya or Uganda, the Yellow Fever Certificate is mandatory. Immigration at Namanga or Holili borders will check this before they even look at your passport.
  • Plastic Ban Enforcement: Tanzania's ban on single-use plastic bags is extremely strict in 2026. Custom officers at border points often search luggage for "hidden" plastic bags or duty-free carriers. Ziploc bags for toiletries are the only exception allowed.

3. Post-Election "High Alert" (January 2026)

Tanzania held elections in late 2025. While the tourist circuits are peaceful, there are some logistical updates:

  • Connectivity: Internet and mobile data services are stable in early 2026, but some social media platforms may still experience intermittent "throttling" in urban areas. Using a VPN is recommended for consistent communication.
  • Urban Gatherings: While safari zones (Serengeti/Ngorongoro) are 100% unaffected, it is advised to avoid large political rallies or crowds in the centers of Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Mwanza this month.

4. Safari & Trekking (January Conditions)

  • The Serengeti "Calving" Season: January is one of the best times to be in the Southern Serengeti (Ndutu). The wildebeest migration is currently there for the calving season, attracting high predator activity (lions and cheetahs).
  • Kilimanjaro: This is the "short dry season," offering some of the clearest skies for climbing. However, because it is peak season, routes like Machame and Marangu are very crowded. If you want solitude, ask your guide about the Rongai or Lemosho routes.

5. Health & Safety

  • Mpox Monitoring: Like Uganda, Tanzania has active health screening at airports and major land borders (like Namanga). Expect a quick temperature check.

  • Malaria: January is hot and can have scattered "short rains," making mosquitoes active. Prophylactics are highly recommended.
