Tsavo West National Park
A deeper feel for the destination.
Tsavo West National Park, spanning approximately 7,065 square kilometers, is renowned for its diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife. Located about 240 kilometers from Nairobi and 250 kilometers from Mombasa, the park is accessible via multiple routes. Visitors from Nairobi can enter through the Mtito Andei Gate, while those from Mombasa often use the Tsavo Gate near Manyani. Additionally, the park can be reached via the Taveta-Voi road through Maktau, Ziwani, and Jipe Gates. For air travelers, there are several airstrips within the park, including Kamboyo, Kilaguni, Tsavo Gate, Jipe, Kasigau, Finch Hattons, Ziwani, and Maktau.
The park boasts various attractions catering to nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Mzima Springs offers a mesmerizing view of crystal-clear waters gushing from beneath lava rocks, creating a picturesque oasis. Lake Jipe, straddling the Kenya-Tanzania border, is teeming with aquatic life and is a haven for bird watchers. Wildlife sightings in the park include leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffaloes, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and crocodiles. The park is also a bird watcher's paradise, with over 600 recorded species.
For those interested in history, Tsavo West is infamous for the "Man-Eaters of Tsavo," a pair of lions that terrorized railway workers in 1898. The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary within the park provides a protected environment for the endangered black rhino, allowing visitors to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
