Your August Holiday Overview

August is a vibrant time at the coast, and since it coincides with school holidays, the city has an infectious, high-energy atmosphere. You will find that the ocean is remarkably clear and calm, making it the peak window for snorkeling and dolphin watching. One of the biggest highlights for the Mombasa Colour Festival, typically held in early August, which transforms the beaches into a kaleidoscope of music and art. Because this is a peak travel month, your secret weapon is the SGR train but you must be quick. Tickets for August sell out almost the moment they are released 60 days in advance, so mark your calendar to secure that window seat for the scenic ride through Tsavo.

Day by Day

Trip Itinerary.

Day 1

Transfer to Mombasa

Your holiday begins at the Nairobi Terminus for the 8:00 AM Inter-County SGR. I highly recommend sitting on the left side of the train; as you pass through Tsavo, it feels like a "bonus safari" where you can often spot elephants and giraffes right from your seat. After arriving at the Miritini station around 2:00 PM, a shuttle will whisk you away to the North Coast. Once you’ve checked into your resort in Nyali or Bamburi, head straight to the beach to feel the sand between your toes and enjoy a chilled glass of madafu (coconut water) as the sun sets..

Day 2

Stepping Into History

After a slow breakfast, you’ll head to the iconic Fort Jesus. Walking through this 16th-century fortress feels like stepping back in time, especially if you hire a local guide to tell you about the many battles fought over its walls. From there, wander into the winding, spice-scented alleys of Old Town. This is the perfect place to shop for intricate Swahili carvings or enjoy a rooftop lunch of authentic chicken biryani. Finish your afternoon with a photo at the famous Mombasa Tusks on Moi Avenue—a "must-do" for any first-time visitor.

Day 3

Marine Wonders and Giraffes

Today is all about the natural beauty of the coast. Start your morning with a glass-bottom boat ride into the Mombasa Marine National Park. The water in August is incredibly clear, so you’ll see vibrant coral gardens and schools of tropical fish without even getting wet—though snorkeling is highly encouraged! In the afternoon, head to Haller Park. It’s a miraculous wildlife sanctuary built on a former quarry where you can hand-feed giraffes and watch the massive hippos during their 4:00 PM feeding time.

Day 4

Souvenirs and the Journey Home

Before you head back to the train station, make a quick stop at the Akamba Handicraft Centre. It’s the best place to find hand-carved wooden souvenirs directly from the artisans. After picking up a few treasures, you’ll head back to the SGR station for your afternoon train. As you glide back toward Nairobi, you’ll have a few hours to scroll through your photos and start planning your next return to the coast.
