Mount Longonot National Park Day Trip
An extinct volcano, Mount Longonot is a distinctive and unique national park to visit in Kenya. Rising dramatically towards the heavens, its slopes increase in steepness the nearer you get to the summit.
There are a number of lovely trails and hikes around the park that take you up to the rim of the extinct volcano. Contained within the crater at the top is a rich ecosystem of various fauna and flora that coat the ground.
Impressive views greet you from up high and the panoramas stretching as far as the eye can see definitely make the tough trek worth undertaking. While it is possible to see various animals such as lions, buffalo and zebra, the main draw of Mount Longonot is the stunning scenery that stretches below the extinct volcano.
The park is accessible via tarmac road from Nairobi (90 kms) and from Nakuru (74 kms)

Mt Longonot Hiking
Depart from Nakuru early in the morning and drive towards Mount Longonot National Park through the scenic Rift Valley landscapes.
Upon arrival at the park, you will begin your hike after registration and a short briefing. The trail gradually ascends before becoming steeper as you approach the crater rim. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Great Rift Valley, surrounding hills, and Lake Naivasha in the distance.
Once at the summit, hikers can choose to relax at the crater rim viewpoint or continue with the full crater rim circuit for a more adventurous and rewarding experience. The rim walk offers stunning panoramic scenery and excellent photography opportunities.
The hike normally takes:
- Approximately 2–3 hours to the summit and back
- Around 4–5 hours including the full crater rim circuit depending on pace and fitness level
After the hike, enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant or picnic area before departing back to Nakuru.
