Day by Day

The journey, step by step.

Day 1

Departure and Afternoon Exploration

Your journey begins at the Nairobi or Mombasa SGR Terminus for the morning inter-county train, which typically departs at 8:00 AM. For those traveling from Nairobi, the train arrives at Mtito Andei for Tsavo West or Voi for Tsavo East around 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Upon arrival, you will be met by your safari guide and proceed with a game drive en-route to your lodge for lunch and check-in. In the late afternoon, you will head out for your first official game drive, perhaps visiting the Rhino Sanctuary if you are in Tsavo West or exploring the Aruba Dam area in Tsavo East, before returning to your camp for dinner and a restful night.

Day 2

Full Day of Wildlife and Scenery

The second day is dedicated to a deeper exploration of the park’s diverse ecosystems and unique landmarks. You will typically start with an early morning game drive to catch predators while they are still active, followed by a hearty breakfast back at the lodge or a picnic in the bush. If you are in Tsavo West, the day often includes a visit to the crystal-clear Mzima Springs to see hippos from an underwater viewing chamber and a stop at the rugged Shetani Lava Flow. In Tsavo East, you might visit the massive Mudanda Rock or the cascading Lugard Falls on the Galana River, ending the day with a sunset game drive to spot the famous "red elephants" of the region.

Day 3

Final Game Drive and Departure

On your final morning, you will enjoy a sunrise game drive at 6:00 AM, which offers the best light for photography and one last chance to spot any elusive wildlife you may have missed. After returning for breakfast and checking out of your lodge, you will take a slow drive back toward the railway station, enjoying the final sights of the park along the way. Your guide will drop you at the Voi or Mtito Andei station in time for the afternoon inter-county train, which usually departs between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, returning you to your starting destination by the early evening.
