Experience The Bliss of Pirate Beach

Hey there! Have you heard about Pirate Beach?  It’s one of the most popular beaches in Kenya’s coastline. Let me walk you through everything you need to know about this amazing beach holiday destination so you can start planning your next Kenya beach adventure.

First things first, Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach locally known as Pirates Beach is the only public beach in Mombasa, located in Mombasa County just a short distance from the city. It’s part of the larger Bamburi Beach area, and trust me, it’s East Africa’s tropical paradise. Named after Kenya’s first president, it was established to provide affordable access to the coast, in contrast to the private beaches owned by nearby resorts. Over the years, it has become a bustling hub for locals and tourists, offering a mix of traditional coastal culture and modern activities like water sports and beachside entertainment. The beach also supports local businesses, making it a key player in Mombasa’s tourism scene.

Pirate Beach Location

Pirate Beach is located along the Mombasa-Malindi Highway in Mombasa County, Kenya. It also boarders Bamburi Beach to the south and Nyali beach to the north, making it easily accessible from the Mombasa city center, approximately 10km north of Mombasa Island. The beach is positioned along the scenic coastline of the Indian Ocean and close to Mombasa Island, making it a popular spot for both local and International tourists.

How you can Access Pirate beach

If you’re coming from Nairobi, you’ve got plenty of options to get you to Jomo Kenyatta Public beach. With road being the most common one…

By road; it’s approximately 492 kilometers from Nairobi to Mombasa (Pirate Beach) an 8 to 9hour drive along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway which mainly depends on traffic and road condition. On the other hand, by road from Nairobi you are guaranteed scenic views of Kenya’s countryside and wildlife from Tsavo National Park along the way which makes it totally worth it.

By Train; If you prefer a faster route, hop on the Madaraka Express train (SGR Train), getting you to Mombasa in 6 hours. Upon arrival at Mombasa SGR Terminal (Miritini) have a short transfer of about 24km (45Min) to the beach.

By Air; For the ultimate convenience, you can fly scheduled daily direct flights from Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi to the Moi International Airport in Mombasa which takes 45-60min. From the airport, it’s a 30-minute drive to Pirate Beach.
