Planning a safari across Kenya and East Africa takes more than just choosing flights, destinations, and hotels. The electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Kenya can influence how seamlessly the safari will unfold. For visitors traveling to Kenya, one of the most important things to consider is immigration requirements.
Kenya has shifted most of
the traditional visa processes to digital platforms for most visitors. Visitors
planning to extend their safaris from Kenya to the wider East Africa, including Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, need to understand these requirements. The Kenyan
eTA should not be treated as entry permission to other countries in East Africa.
What
is the electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) of Kenya?
This is an authorization
by the Kenyan government that determines whether a visitor is eligible to visit
Kenya or not. Travelers need an approved eTA before starting their safari in
Kenya. However, this entry permission does not guarantee them authorization to
other member counties of the East Africa. Every country has its own
authorization requirements at the immigration department. The documents apply
for everyone visiting any part of the country be it Maasai Mara, Amboseli or
Samburu.
Who
needs a Kenya eTA?
Not all international
travelers need an approved eTA to visit Kenya. Members of the East African
Community (EAC) Partner States; Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and Democratic
Republic of Congo do are exempted from the eTA requirements of Kenya for their
six months stay in Kenya. Full exemption also apply for Kenyans, permit
holders, specific residents and other traveler categories.
What
Documents are required?
The official
Kenya eTA system lists:
However,
there may be other documents required for travelers depending on the purpose of
their travel. It is advisable for travelers to have all these documents
beforehand.
How to apply Kenya’s eTA
The
application is purely done online. Here is a step by step procedure application
process that should be done through the official Kenya eTA website.
·
Visit the official eTA website
·
Select the appropriate application
·
Enter traveler information
·
Upload the documents required
·
Submit the application
·
make payments for the application
·
Wait for the immigration decision via
email
·
Download and print the approved eTA for
presentation during the safari
How Long Does the Kenya eTA
application process take?
The
Kenya eTA application process takes about three working days. However,
travelers are advised to apply their Kenya eTA at least two weeks before their
safari begins.
Moving in and around East Africa
Across
East Africa travelers can use private safari vehicles, land border crossing,
scheduled buses or regional buses depending on their safari itinerary, border
requirements, budget and the attractions.
Do you need a new Kenya eTA when
returning to Kenya?
The
answer to this depends on the nationality of the visitor, and type of the
Kenyan permission given. Kenya offer both multi-nationality and standard
options for the traveler’s eligibility to access Kenya.
The
smartest way to visit East Africa as an international traveler is building a
safari itinerary first then check the Eta requirements against the safari plan.
